At present, NATO has 28 members.
In 1949, there were 12 founding members of the
Alliance: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy,
the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The other member countries are: Greece and Turkey (1952),
Germany (1955),Spain (1982),
the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland (1999),
Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania,
Slovakia, Slovenia (2004), and Albania and Croatia (2009).
essential purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. And to promote
democratic values and encourages consultation and cooperation on defense and security issues to build trust , in the long
run, prevent conflict.
NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If
diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military capacity needed to undertake crisis-management operations.
These are carried out under Article 5 .The heart of NATO is expressed in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, in which
the signatory members agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America
shall be considered an attack against them all; and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of
will exercise the right of individual or collective self-defense recognized by Article 51 of said Treaty........

The Next summit will
take place in Wales on the 4th & 5th ofSeptember 2014.
A number of preparatory meetings of Allied Defense and Foreign
are expected to be held in the run-up to the September summit.
